PM2.5の濃度も春に上昇

一方、PM2.5は日本国内で1年中計測されています。発生源が中国だけでなく国内にもあるからですが、3月から5月にかけて濃度が上昇する傾向がみられ、夏から秋にかけては比較的低い濃度になります。

黄砂の中でも直径が2.5μm以下ならPM2.5にカウントされます。黄砂については、長崎市で2003?2007年の3?5月における黄砂飛来と救急搬送の関連を調べた研究によると、黄砂の飛来が多い日は、飛来しなかった日に比べて救急搬送数が12％増加し、心臓病と脳卒中が21％増えています。

PM2.5については、米国環境保護庁によると、日平均濃度が10μg/m3増加するごとに、死亡全体では0.29?1.12％、循環器系疾患による死亡は0.47?0.85％、呼吸器系疾患による死亡は1.67?2.20％、それぞれ上昇します。PM2.5の濃度が高くなるほど死亡リスクは高まるのです。

また世界最悪レベルの大気汚染に悩むインドでも、同様の理由で大気汚染が大幅に改善された。CNNによれば、デリーでは規制が始まった初日に微小粒子状物質「PM10」が最大で44％減少し、インド北部からは数十年ぶりにヒマラヤ眺望が可能になった。

今回の大気汚染の緩和は一時的なものにとどまるだろうし、きれいな空気を取り戻すために莫大な経済的犠牲を払って人々の外出を禁じることは得策とはいえない。一方で、WHOによれば、大気汚染に起因する肺がんや呼吸器疾患などで年間約700万人もの人が死亡しているという現実があり、環境汚染問題も深刻な問題であることには変わりはない。

かつて川崎市海岸部の工業地帯で大気汚染による公害（川崎公害）が問題化し、気管支喘息が多くみられた当時は地域特有の公害病と誤解される例も多かった

川崎病の病因は不明で、感染症なのか自己免疫疾患なのかは、はっきり特定されておらず、感染症説、スーパー抗原説、自己抗原説、RNAウイルス説など、様々な仮説がある。ただ発病は夏と冬に多く、地域流行性があることから、何らかの感染が引き金となって起こる可能性が示唆されている。
